ALLEGED BLEEDING OF KAURI TREES.

Justices, Nicholas Hands, on remand, was charged with wilfully damaging 80 kauri trees, the property of the Kauri Timber Company, Ltd., at Gumtown, to the extent of £200. He was also charged with a theft of gun> valued at £30, and with receiving this same knowing it to have been" stolen. Mr S. Mays, for the Crown Prosecu tor, appeared for the prosecution, and Mr F. P. Burgess, for the defendant. The sitting lasted all day, and a considerable amount of evidence waß heard. The Bench committed accused for trial, bail being allowed. THE VETERANS' HOME. ■ 1 (By Tele_raph.—Paruameutary 3eporter.) W___L_NGTON, this day. Speaking at the annual meeting of the Veterans' Association yesterday morning, His Excellency the Governor called special attention to the particular value of the work of the association, and congratulated the meeting on the signal honour conferred upon the association by His Majesty consenting to grant his patronage to it. This was a unique honour, recognising as it does from the highest authority the services rendered by the veterans of both arms ot the service in the establishment of peace and order in this part of tne Empire. Tbe Veterans' Home in Auckland was a standing record of the appreciation of the services rendered by the old men and an earnest wish was expressed that public interest should be awakened in that institution. Sir Wm. BusseU made a statement as to the financial position of the Home, and it was decided that an effort be made to secure the hep of fri nds of the movement to guarantee.individual yearly contributions in support of the maintenance fund for the next three or four years,, by which time the capital account will have reached the sum necessary* (£ 16,000) to support the institution.
