PROHIBS VERSUS BEER.
(To tbe i-ditorji Sir, —The Germans all drink beer. Now, I have seen a few thousand German troops, and in physique they looked quite equal to British troops. I have also known some Germans in Auckland who drank beer; but neither mentally nor physically were they inferior to colonials. It is not the use, but the abuse, thereof that plays the mischieL I don't recollect much about, beer when I was a young fellow, as it was chiefly whisky that we patronised in the shape of grog or toddy, the former being a mixture of cold water with or without sugar, the latter being whisky with hot water and sugar. The two most powerful concoctions I have ever seen were as follows: A glass of cold whisky, into which was poured a glass of boiling whisky, with some sugar added. I never tasted this, but have seen it used with startling effect. The other concoction was made R3 follows A glass of cream, a glass of honey, a raw egg, and a glass of good whisky, all beat up together. This made the most pleasant and the most nourishing draught that I have ever tasted, being a mixture of the choicest productions of nature. Now, I would not recommend any of our prohibitionists to try the former, because they would be dead drunk in less than a quarter of an hour; but I can thoroughly recommend a trial of the latter, as it is truly called "the Nectar of Gods," although 1 have not tasted it for many years.—l am, etc., AMICUS.
