THE PREMIER.
LAKE ELLESMEEE SETTLERS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association. CHRISTCHTRCH. Saturday. The Premier received two deputations to-day. and in the evening left for Wellington. A deputation of Lake ETlesmere settlers asked that the Government, out of accrued rents from Lake lands, should make provision for the letting out of Lake Ellesmere when in flood It wr_ also requested that a special drainage board should be set up to deal with their needs. Mr. Seddon agreed that a comprehensive scheme was necessary, but : the question was whether the interests • involved were commensurate with the cost of forming a permanent outlet. A special Act of Parliament would require to be passed before a portion oi the accrued rents could be devoted to the purpose. The Government engineer had . estimated the cost to be nearly £ 10.000. 'He would look into the whole matter. One of the deputation asked Mr. Seddon whether there was any probability of a revaluation of the lease-in-per-petuity holdings in Lake Ellesmere district? Mr. Seddon said he could tell him this much, that a contract once made with the Government was sacred, so far as he was concerned "Tkm't yon lose any sleep over the matter," 1 he added.
