j VICTORIA V. AUCKLAND IMPERIAL. , The above teams met for the first time , this season on Saturday, at the Kingsland ground. Both . sides put good team 3 Into the field. The Victoria were captained hy K. Cary. in the absence of Schotield. while , the Imperial were under the charge of H. . Webb. The Imperial winning the toss el- . ected to take the wind for the first quarter, and started off strongly. However. . the maroons soon got to work ana the piaced men, assisting the ruck splendidly, worked the ball up against the wind, and A. 1 Buttle scored the first goal for the Vies. Eucouraged by this success the Victoria I returned to the attack, and Welsh regis- \ 1 tered their second goal. The quarter endi ed with a lead for the Victoria of 10 i points. The second quarter was very even- , ly contested, the ball traveling from one ; I end of the ground to the other at light- ; nfng speed. At half time the scores were:—; Victoria, 3 goals 2 behinds: Imperial 1 i goal 7 WBhlnds. In the second halt the i play became very exciting. Goals were, > scored for the Imperial by Webb (2) and 1 Stanford, and for the Victoria by Orp-; | wood. Entering on the last quarter the I Imperial, who had to play against the : wind, were 3 points to the bad. but the j followers, led by Webb, who was playing a- beautiful game, set to work with ; determination, and working the leather : ' up the field, scored a goal against the , wind amidst great cheering, the -Imperial i ; thus winning by three points. The scores I I «-ere: —Imperial, 4 goals 10 behinds — 34 I points; Victoria. 4 goals 7 behinds — 311 points. The goal kickers were — For the' ' Imperial: Webb (2), Sandford. and Spenee; j j Victoria — Orpwood. Welsh. A. Buttle. I ; and Cary. The game was an excellent one ! ■■ in all departments, being hy far tbe best i exhibition seen this season. On the side '■ of the winners, the most work was put ln by the followers. Webb, Goodfellow, and Wilson, all three playing fine games, j They were greatly assisted by Spenee on I the back line: Breese. centre; GleDisteri and Callinan, forward: and Mason and A. j Bettis. who were promoted from the Juniors. On the Victoria side, Welsh and A. Buttle were the most prominent, while' i Cary. Brooks, George. Orpwood. and Wili liams were always conspicuous. Mr P. ! Lawson umpired the game in his usual able manner. ! JUNIORS MATCH. Prior to the senior match on Saturday, teams captained by A.. Bettis and h! I Pirn»«" Both aides wers strongly r»»
presented, and c capital game was witnessed. The match ended in a victory for the former's team by 2 points. I_e scores —-ere: "A" team: 3 goais. 3 belirnds: "B" team: 3 goals, 1 behind. The best players were Bettis (2). Mason, Inman, for the winners. and 11. Forster, Sloman, Finlay, Ivll for the "B',s" B. Sandford umpired. The Junior competition starts next Saturday, the draw to be made at a meeting to be' held at the Amateur Sports Club on »> ednesday evening.
