THIS DAY. l Before Mr. S. E. McCarthy, S.M.) The Drunkards.—Harriet Williamson, a prohibited person, who pleaded guilty to the second charge of drunkenness within six months, was fined £3 or a week's imprisonment, while Alfred Davitt. aL=o a second offender, had to pay a penalty of £-. Two first offenders were fined £ i each, and another 10/ and costs. A charge of drunkenness was made against Robert Cundall, who pleaded not guilty, tie said that he owed a. fine, and went to the watch-house to give himself up to #erve the alternative. He was excited, but not drunk. The magistrate dismissed the case. Woman's Bad Character.—A young woman named Harriet Baker wad charged with usin-r obscene language ir Weliesiey-street. and also with being an idle and disorderly person, who had insufficient lawful means of support. She admitted having used bad language, but denied the other charge. Constable Boag said he had known the woman for -ix months as a very bad character. Three other constables spoke of her immorality. :md their evidence was not questioned by the accused. "'The best thing I can do for you is to send you to prison for a long term." remarked Mr. McCarthy, who convicted and discharged Baker on the vagrancy charge, and sentenced her to a year's imprisonment lor using obscene language. A Mount Roskill Assault.—Logan Leathart pleaded guilty to having assaulted Henry Wilson at Mount Ro-kill on January 24th. Sub-Inspector Black stated that the complainant was knocked down twice and kicked by the defendant, the only reason to be assigned for the assault being that Wilson had refused to fetch beer for the defendant, who was prohibited. Leathart had been twice convicted previously for assaults, and he was now fined £5. being also bound over in his own surety of £ 100 and two sureties of £50 each to keep the peace for twelve months. Remanded. —Kenneth Harold Kidd, who had been arrested on a warrant, charged with a breach of a maintenance order, was remanded for & weelt to Thames.
