WAIHI BOROUGH COUNCIL
.(Prom Our Own Correspondent.)^ — ii WAIHI, this day. The Borough Council's fortnightly meet* ing was held last evening. Mr H. Atkinson, of Auckland, wrote offering to supply gas in bulk from Paeroa, storage, reticulation, mains, etc., to be supplied by the Council. The engineer recommended that Mr Atkinson be asked at what price he would supply gas per 1000 cubic feet. The Council debated Mr Atkinson's offer. A majority of the councillors spoke against giving a monopoly in any shape to outside firms, the Council haying carried municipalise tion of the gas supply, by a poll of electors. Mr Atkinson's letter was formally received. The Ohinemuri County Council wrote demanding a refund of gold duty paid on account of gold sold by the Ohinemuri River Syndicate, .claiming that the said geld was wou within the county, and that it had been wrongfully described as obtained from within the borough.. The county also demanded the sum of £410 IS/11, main road maintenance, for Diecember. It was decided to acknowledge receipt of the letter.
The National Bank advised receipt oC the sum of £1590. gold duty for December.The Katikatl ttoud Board wrote asking for payment of the borough's subsidy ol £20. Granted.
The Waihi Consols G.M. Company applied for a supply of water for its boring machine. The engineer recommended that it be granted for 25/. This was agreed to. Mr Winstanley, health officer, wrote urging the Council to prevent the possibility of communication of scarlet fever cases as reported.
With reference to the Borough CoanelPs request for more police, the Commissioner replied that the present strength of th<s police at Waihi would be supplemented by; the addition of one constable.
The Secretary to the Post-office at Wellington wrote that the Department tea* unable to establish a third daily mail to Paeroa as requested.
Tho National Bank advised receipt of £107 2/6 sroldfields revenue for December.
The Waihi School of Mines made cation for a grant of £100' towards the school. The application was granted., Speaking to the same, Mr Newth said he considered the time would come wben the local bodies should recognise the great Importance of assisting prospecting in a local sense, by making larger grants. He considered the effect of turning out mine managers, etc., from the School of Min«s generally went to benefit other coontrfes* few billets being procurable here. Prospecting should receive every encowragement. / '
Accounts In general £884 3/11, wate? works £298 4/11, and wages to 14th Jannary were passed for payment. The Finance Committee meeting cartvened for the previous evening lapsed* there being no quorum.
