TROOPERS' MEMORIAL UNVEILED.
OAMARU, Thursday. His Excellency the Governor (Lord Plunket), accompanied by Sir J. G. Ward, and the Hon. T. Y. Duncan, arrived in town to-day to unveil the memorial to the local troopers who fell in South Africa. There was a verylarge attendance of the" public and volunteers, and the day was beautifully fine. The memorial cost £1500. It is erected in the main street, and is a very imposing structure. Short speeches were made by His Excellency, Sir J. G. Ward, the Hon. T. Y. Duncan, the Mayor, and the chairman of the County Council. In the afternoon a garden party was held, at which the South Island Cadet Shield was presented to the winners, the North School Cadets. His Excellency and party left in the evening for Christchurch, where he will remain for some days.
