Leslie Hunt has resigned the position of organist and choirmaster at St. Matthew's Church. The Hon. James Carroll, Native Minister, will probably visit the variousMaori centres before returning to Wellington. It is understood that Mr T. K. Taylor, M.HJL. will visit the West Coast immediately after the holidays to lecture on the prohibition question. Dr. Solf, the G vera or of German Samoa, will go to I tonia this week to spend about a month in the district. Afterwards ho goes South. Captain David Watson, who left the service of the Union Steamship Co. lately has been appointed secretary of the Shipmasters' Association at Wellington. Owing to ill-health. Mr James Ednoni editor of the "Sydney Bulletin. started last Saturday on a four months ioliday. Mr Frank Fox takes his place tiuring bus absence. Sir Robert Stout and party left Kamn Sanatorium on Saturday for the Bay of Islands (telegraphs our Whan«*rei correspondent). It is expected that the party will pass through Whangarei on the return journey to Auckland. Mr J M. L. MacDnald. of Sydney, leaves Auckland on Thursday for Rotorua for a few days' visit. Mr and Mrs. C. H. Pcttifer. of Saadowne, lale of Wight, who are making a comprehensive tour of the colony, under the guidance of Messrs. Cook .and Sons are leaving Auckland for Rotorua, -Trtiere they spend a few day?. After"wards" they go on to Taumaranui to make the frip down the Wangnnui. They are accompanied by Mr. L. Thompson, of Aberdeen. Mr- C. H. B. Bradley- of Sydney, leaves | Auckland on Wednesday for Okoroire and Rotorua en mute to Wellington. Mr. J. Calder, clso of Sydney, is going -ap to Rotorua. and then on to Wellington, shortly. i Mr. David Goldie left Auckland te- , fey hy the West Coast steamer for the ?outh! where he intends to spend a fort- - night's holiday. Fink and Mr. Roland Fink, of Melbourne, who are making a holiday visit to the colony, leave Auckland for Rotorua to-morrow. They go overland to Wellington. No countenance is given by Sir George Turner to the story that there is a movement on foot to send him to Lon- j don next year as the first Federal High Commissioner, with a view to assisting in the consolidation of State debt?. He declares'that he knows nothing of any such intention. Sir Joseph Swan, of Sunderland. who •was recently knighted, is a brother of Mr G. H. S-wan, for many years Mayor of Napier. The new Knight invented the j Swan incandeseput electric lamp and the i ■; jtiodern photographic dry plate, and he also effected improvements in photomechanical printing. He is in his 76th year. Mr C Holdswortli. who occupies a | *fah position in the Union Co., returned to. Auckland from Calcutta in the Apartma yfesterday. He has been makmg a tour of the" world with Mrs Holdsworth. Mr H G. Wernhain, who arrived from !New Britain in November last, returns fhere in March next to take up the posy - tion as manager to a large trading plantation firm. It is understood that his marriage to Miss Jessie Mill, of Northcote, will eventuate early in_ rebruary, after- which Mr Wernham intends to h*ve a month's travelling round New Zealand and Australia prior to his leaving for the Islands.
