THE NORTHERN ASSOCIATION TOURNAMENT. (By Telegraph.—Press AssociaUoiU GISBORNE, this day. The weather was glorious for the opening of the tournament. The Gisborne Club's fine green was gaily decorated, and there was a large attendance when the tournament opened. Pahiatua and New Plymouth teams failed to arrive, leaving the number of competing clubs twenty-two. At the opening ceremony speeches of welcome were made by Mr. Harding, president of the Gisborne Bowling Club; Mr. Townley, Mayor of Gisborne, and the Hon. James Carroll. Mr. J. H. Mentiplay proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. James Kirker, president oi the association, for trophies valued at ten guineas, presented by him, and three cheers were given for the absent president. Results in the first round are as follows: Section A: Feilding 16, beat Patea 13; Napier 15, beat Remuera 14; Gisborne 25, beat Kaiti 9; Greenmeadows 29, beat Dannevirke 15; Ponsonby 18. beat Auckland 13. Section B: Masterton 28, beat Hawera 20: Carlton 22, beat Victoria 14: Hastings 24, beat Whatupoko 18; Mount Eden 27, beat Terau 14; Rocky Nook 24, beat Wanganui 18. In the first round Wellington and Petone received byes. In the match, Remuera v. Napier, one of the beat, of the morning, Remuera opened with four on the first head; Napier replied with one, two and one on succeeding heads, making matters even. On the fourteenth head Remuera led by 12 to 8, and on the 18 th the game was 14 to 13, Play was close and exciting, and at the 20th head the score was 14 all. In the final head Napier lay one, and secured a. victory by 15 to 14. In the Carlton v. Victoria match Carlton obtained a lead of five on the first three heads. Victoria secured four in the next two. and Carlton a couple on the sixth. Victoria made four on the seventh, but Carlton replied with four. The next three heads ended in the Aucklandere' favour. Victoria had the best of the succeeding three, and the game was then 15 to 12. Carlton secured two on the 16th and 19th 3 and. keeping the lead, won by 22 to 14. In the Ponsonby r. Auckland match the city rink started with crushing vigour, and had eight on the slate before Ponsonby showed colour. The suburban men then pulled themselves together, notching 2 on the fourth head. 1 on the sth, and 3on the !>th. On the 14th Ponsonby secured 2. piving thorn a lead of one. They followed np this success with .'» on the. 15th head, and 1 on the 16th. finishing winners on the 20th by 18 to 13. Wanganui obtained a handsome lead of six on the first two brads against Rocky Nook, but the latter dri'\v up on the next, three, and got three on the seventh. Wanganui scored throe on tho sixth, and Rocky Nook four on tlifi eighth, the Auckianders then loading by 11 to 0. On tho 14th the cranio ws 16 to 14. Rocky Nook then forged ahead, being 24 to 14 at the ISth head. Wanganui played better in the la«t heads, but wore too far behind. Hascldcn played a great game for the winners. i In the match Mt.
