HEROISM ON BOTH SIDES. FOUGHT TO THE DEATH. (Received 7.40 a.m.) LONDON, September 9. Many stories of heroism are told about both sides in the fighting at Liao-yang. . The Russians on one occasion surrounded two Japanese battalions in the midst of the growing millet, and desperate fighting followed. The Japasese refused to aeecpt quarter, preferring death to surrender ; consequently all of them were killed. The Russian frontier guards died at their post, refusing to surrender.
