Details of the Petrel massacre at Aurora Island, in the New Hebrides, shows that the natives surprised the schopner while at anchor. The crew made a desperate fight for their lives. Captain Pentecost was pinioned, and made a target for the natives' arrows and spears. He was covered with wounds. He was then thrown into the sea, while still living. The natives, with great glee, watched the sharks seize him and tear him to pieces.
