DEVONPORT COUNCIL The Devonport Borough Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr. E. W. Alison, presiding. It was decided to ask the Minister of Public Health to forward early his approval of the Stanley Poiut drainage scheme, as it was proposed to proceed with the arrangements lor carrying out the work as promptly as possible. The council's legal advisers reported thai, having the minister's consent, the drainage work could be proceeded with without necessarily taking v . vote of the ratepayers. The council, on tire information of -Mr. John Smith, decided to take legal proceedings against a carter for removing sand from Cheltenham Beach. Other offenders wiU be similarly dealt with. The question of the water consumption in the borough arose out of a report on the shnltiug off of the supply for some nights recently. It was stated that an abnormal waste of water toc/k place every night. The users of garden hose were alleged to be the chief offenders. Councillor Murdoch mentioned that the daily consumption in the borough, averaged G'2 gallons per head of the total population, which seemed lo him an absolute waste. The sanitary inspector reported four cases of wilful wa.sie of water by users of hose, and it was decided to advertise a warning to offenders, who will be prosecuted in future. An amendment to take immediate action in the case of the first offendei was lost by a majority of one. Accounts amounting to £30 were passed for payment.
