SOUTHERN NEWS.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. In the Supreme Court this morning Edward Winter was found guilty ol index-cut assault ou a young girl, and sentenced lo eighteen mouths' and twelve months', the sentences to be cumulative. The Chief Justice said that though he was opposed to flogging, he would have to order floggings if these cases continued.
A conference of school inspectors of the colony opened this morning at Parliament Buildings. About thirty inspectors were present, and Mr Tate, director of education in Victoria, was also in attendance. Mr liogben, In-spector-General, presided. OAMARU, this day.
In the Supreme Court, before Mr Justice Williams, Peter Clifford, on a charge of shooting at and wounding Albert Nelson, at Moeraki, on January llth. was admitted to probation for twelve months. Last evening a child, aged two years old, son of Air. U. A. Papprill, chemist, of Sydenham,, fell into a tank and was drowned.
