A FAMILY TRAGEDY.

A sad story comes from Mentone, on the Riviera, where a child five years of age lost his own" life and caused the death of his mother and a brother aged fourteen.

The family, named Roeca, Inhabited a cottage outside the village of Gorblo, five miles from Mentone. On the evening of August 2, the younger boy, while playing lv a field, came upon an unexploded shell, which had been thrown there by an Alpine battery while practising.

The boy picked up the shell and carried it home, and had almost reached the door when It fell and exploded. A tremendous report followed. The boy waa killed, and fragments of the ahell struck hla mother and brother, who were seated at the Bide of the cottage.

M. Rocca and his daughter, who were on the other side of the building, escaped unharmed, and when they ran to the assistance of Mme. Rocca and her two boys they found that only the elder gave any sign of life. Hie injuries, however, were of such a terrible nature that he died while being conveyed to the village.
