A deputation representing 40 social and political societies waited on Sir Win. Lyne, and sought total prohibition for opium used for smoking - . Sir W. Lyne replied that he had no power under the Customs Act, which recognised .opium by placing a duty of from liO/ to CO/ per pound on it. He would, however, consult his colleagues with reference to passing legislation. New South Wales imported in 1901 18,754 lbs. of opium; Victoria, 7725 lbs.; Queensland, 17,784 lbs.; and other States smaller quantities.
