TRADES and LABOUR COUNCIL
A STORMY MEETING,
A special meeting of delegates td'the Auckland Trades ' and--Labour Goti*sl ■was held lasC evening in the Tailoresses Hall, at which the president. Mr T. Phillips, occupied the -hair. Proceedings were of a most lively character. Nd"tice of motion had been given at a previous meeting by Mr Woods on behalf of. ibe Moulders'. Union to alter several rules. The most" important alteration proposed was in rule _, relating to the number of delegates to represent unions, and also that "no delegate to this Council be other than an 'effectire working member'of a union affiliated to the Council." It was the discussion upon that clause that oaused lively proceedings, fully two hours being devoted to the matter. On the question being finally put* to the meeting, 24 voted for the motion aaid IS against, the 'majority of the latter being members of the Socialist Party and non-unionists. On the president declaring the motion carried, a perfect uproar broke forth, the proceedings being' of a most disorderly ohara,eter. ___c Socialists were partieuly prominent, several union delegates threatened to "chuck out*' one of the disturbers of the peace. The presii'tent's ruling Avas questiorLcd several times, but on'appeal being made to the meeting the chair was always upheld. The minority withdrew from the meeting.
Mr Woods also moved alterations to rule 12, "He shall pay all moneys on receipt to the treasurer, who shall pay same into the bank in the name of the Council." After & short discussion the motion was adopted. On a count of the latenes* of the -hour.- the meeting w#s then adjourned until next Wednesday.
