In the cricket match Sussex v. Surrey Sussex declared its innings closed with GOO runs for the loss of seven wickets. Ranjitsinhji contributed 204. The demand for copies of the Elgin War Commission report has exceeded any since that of the Parnell Commission was issued. The report itself has already been reprinted twice, and the copy of the evidence once. The Westralia experienced stormy weather in crossing the Tasnian Sea, The German arrested at Oyster Bay pointed a revolver at President Roosevelt. A detective accompanying the President seized the revolver in the nick of time. Colonel Swayne is assuming control of operations in Somaliland. General Manning will shortly return to England. The Abyssinian forces will co-operate, occupying the Mihnil-Gerloguli-Galkayer line. Operations will he resumed in Somaliland about the middle of October. General DragomiretT sacrifices £30,000 by resigning the Governor-Generalship of Kieff. He declared that he was ashamed and pained at constantly employing troops massacring political malcontents and innocent civilians. Miss May Goulet, daughter of the late Mr Ogdcn Goulet, the American millionaire, is betrothed to the Duke of Roxburgh. The New South Wales Aseernb'y has appointed a Select Committee to inquire into the. alleged evasion of the purpose of the Arbitration Act by certain industrial unions and persons. A brawl occurred between fifteen French soldiers and four Americans at Pekin. The Frenchmen used their bayonets, and wounded two of their antagonists. A committee of the New Soutli Wales Legislative Assembly has been appoint- I ed to inquire into the alleged evasion j of the Arbitration Act. It will prim- i arily deal with the dispute between the i rival shearers' organisations. j The ship Torrens, from Adelaide, col- I lided with the steamer Capulet in the j Thames. The latter sank, but the Torrens escaped with some damage to i her stem.Much interest is being taken in the j military staff ride under supposed war | conditions between Campbelltown and j Sydney.
