THE BARQUE ALDEBARAN AT HOKIANGA.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—Not having seen your flaring report of May Ist relative to the barque Aldebaran crossing Hokianga bar until my return, permit me to say that your correspondent evidently had a surfeit of had whisky after reading Reid or Marryat's novels. It was a matter of indifference whether the tug returned or not, as it was an impossibility for the ship to go on shore by the time she got back. The ship was close to the South Head, and in the channel, going two knots an hour, in addition to a strong flood-tide. I don't see that anyone was entitled to praise or otherwise. As it was purely an accident, crossing an ugly bar, and the ship crossing without broaching-to, there was really no danger, as the ship kept good steerage way all the time. — I am, etc.,
