In our obituary column will be found notice of the decease of a well-known Auckland, Mr Henry James Syms, aged 41 years. He was the second son of Mr Henry Syms, P.P.G.M., of Auckland District M.U. Oddfellows. The late Mr Henry James Syms was a P.G. of the Fountain of Friendship Lodge. He served his apprenticeship in Auckland (where he was born) to the blacksmithing and horse-shoeing trade. At one time he was a prominent member of the Waitemata Boating Club, and filled the office of treasurer for a year. At £he time of his death he occupied various positions under the Queensland Government, namely, sergeant of police, clerk of petty sessions and electoral registrar, and several other appointments at Windorah. His ma.ny friend In Auckland will be sorry to bear of his early demise.
A curious case came before Mr T. Hutchison, S.M., at the Police Court this morning, when Arthur Sharp pleaded guilty to being found at night without lawful excuse on the premises of Wood and Co., Parnell, also to being a rogue and a vagabond, and stealing a shirt value 3/11, the property of George Tutt, Parnell. The accused seemed to take very little interest in the case,, and the police staged that a few months ago he was arrested for attempting to commit* suicide in Mechanics Bay. Since that time he had been roaming about doing nothing. Sharp said nothing, excepting that he was guilty, and he was committed for a month's imprisonment on two ■ charges, the sentences being cumulative. The charge of theft was withdrawn.
