POLICE COURT—THIS DAY.

Carting Away the Street.—A haulier named William Giles, who pleaded guilty to removing earth from a street under the control of the Devonport Borough Council, was fined 10/ and 23/6 costs, including 10/6 counsel's fee. Mr. Martin, who represented the Devonport Borough Council, stated that a profitable practice was carried on by some people, who carted away the earth from unformed streets, as many as 12 loads having been taken from the place where Giles obtained his.

Avondale Farmers at Variance.—John Irving, an Avondale farmer, was summoned George Tatton, another farmer, for assaulting him. the complainant asking for sureties that Irving would keep the peace towards him. The evidence showed that the assault was not serious, and that it arose over a heated dispute about grazing rights. Irving denied striking the complainant, and asked for an adjournment to secure evidence corroborating this. His Worship therefore adjourned the case until Friday.
