A learned clergyman had actually quoted Greek at dinner, and a lady sitting next to James Payn, the novelist, asked in a whisper what the quotation meant. He gave her to understand, with a well-assumed hiush, that it was scarcely fit for a brh's car. "Dear me. You don't mean to say —" "Please don't ask me any more," said Payn pleadingly—"l really could not tell you."
