intelligence of the Pope's death was received with the profoundesrt regret by the Catholic community of AuckIfi nd. Immediately on receipt of the news through the medium of a "Star' <j.\tra, His Lordship the Bishop, the Icight Rev. Dr. Lenihan, had the flag at Kishop's House lowered to half-mast, and the death knell was tolled by the cathedral bells. To-night prayers will be recited in all the Catholic churches for the repose of the soul of the Pontiff, but otherwise no memorial services will be held until next week. The Bishop has arranged to have the priests of the fjiocese summoned to the city for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. On Tuesday evening the "Dirge" will be sung at the cathedral, when His Lordship the Bishop will preside, and the lollowing morning High Pontifical Requiem Mass will be celebrated by the Bishop. A sermon will be preached by one of the priests on the life of the Pope. The cathedral was draped in black to-day, and this will be continued during the next fortnight. No special arrangements have been made for i-ext Sunday. The Hibernian ball, which was to take place on. Thursday, ha 3 been postponed owing to the Pope's death.
