AMATEUR ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIP.

CANTERBURY WINS THE BANNER.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

DUNEDIN, Saturday.

With such ideal weather as prevailed on Saturday afternoon the attendance j the athletic championship meeting was disappointing, but it must be borne in mind that of late Dunedin has had surfeit of outdoor amusement, with four days' cricket, live days'' racing, the local amateur sports meeting, and pieces for ail trades. Another factor to ac-ount for the limited gathering is that the sports were held at Carisbrook,

which is not nearly so convenient as the more popular Caledonian Ground, where the cycle championships are to be decided at the end of the present week. Tha fields, too. were disappointing, and re grefc was expressed that Auckland had not seen tit to enter a solitary competitor. Two champions only were seeu out, viz.* Webster, of Wellington, and Simp'of Canterbury- The first-nanied waa in a class by himself as a sprint runner. He began by winning the 100 yd easily in the" capital time uf lOaec, next accounted for 220 yds flat rae? (run in one heat), in 22 3-5 sec> 0T one-fifth of a -eeond under the standard time, and put a seal on his fame by running away with the 440 yards flat race. This was _j 3 best effort, for finishing alone he breasted the tape in the great time of "0 2-5 sees' t^us equoting the performance put up by W. McPherson, of Sydney in February. 1391. Had there been anyone to push Webster, who was in great buckle, he would easily have lowered the colonial amateur record. Simpson who represented New Zealand at last English amateur championship meeting, was handicapped by a sore kn ee and ran iv bandages. It took him all his time to shake off Flewellyn, a fellow club mate, in the mile race, which occupied omins, or nearly half a minute uader standard time, but lie romped home in the three mile event, in which he finished with a brilliant sprint, which fairly earned the applause of the spectators. Interest in this race was fortunately lost through Burke, the Dunedin sheer anchor, having sprained a 3 inew of his foot while training a couple of nights ago. He was doing excelU work on the tracks, and many think _ c would have fully extended the Kirwee man. Despite the jeers ot the crowd, Davis, though hipped, kept on the track, and notched a point (third place) for Wellington. Had some or Duaedin men been equally sportsmanlike our shield points would have been increased. Martin, the erstwhile champion hammer thrower, was quite out or farm, and has probably been seen at his beat for tlie hist time. Baird. of Ashburton, furnished the surprise of the day by finishing an easy first with a brow of P0 feet 1 inch. The standard, 130 feet, was admittedly too severe, and no one expected that it would be register- ,- i. v,,__ Pc=-i,--A'l thf shield lor cd. Pollock secured first place in the half-mile fiat, and Los* in the one mile walk. The latter appeared to mix his gait, but was not cautioned. In the three mile event bow-e-er V he was quickly off tbe track tor unfair walking. The arrangements were admired, and capital time was observed Caretaker G. Mills had the track m splendid order.
