MORE LAND FOR SETTLEMENT
PREVENTION OF CRUELTY

fir. Seddon. speaking at Cdlverden yes terdav. stated that the Government had bought 1.1,000 acres ot" the Hightield estate°in North Cnterbury at a price well within the valuer's tigures. The purchase has o*iven general satisfaction, and the estate would be cut up and offered for settlement as soon a.s possible. Some time ago the Parnassus estate, north ot Waiau River, was offered to the Government Mr. Seddon had already seen the estate from the Cheviot side, but on Wednesday he drove through from Mendip Hill io Waiau. and saw the back ot the estate. He liked the land much better on the Mendip side than on the Cheviot side. H contained good country, and it is probable the Government will purchase Culverden. ' The inspector for the Society tor Prevention of Cruelty to Animals had an interview with the Premier on the question of a subsidy. The Premier as,:ed him to have a full statement of the matter sent him. and he would give it consideration. He considered the objects of the society of a most worthy character, and would be prepared to give the present request due consideration Mr. Seddon returned to Leslielulls last night, and will journey to Hanmer Springs today. _______
