A WELSHER'S PUNISHMENT.

A "welsher." who stated on his bag that he hailed from Ballarat, met his deserts at the Campbell's Creek races, Castlemaine, on Boxing Day. For the Publicans' Purse the legitimate bookmakers were asking 5 to 1 on the favourite. The "welsher." who was offering even money, was rushed with business, booking over £100. When the favourite was seen coming in some thirty lengths ahead the "welshers" made a beeline for the railway station. The irate backers gave chase and caught him as he was getting over the fence of the reserve. They handled him very roughly and dragged him back on to the course. Two mounted and three foot policemen rescued him from the crowd and he divided all the money he had in his bag among those who held his tickets. He left the course amidst much hooting and jeering.
