GALLANT ATTEMPT'S AT RESCUE.

A sad drowning fatality, attended by gallant efforts at life-saving, occurred at Como on the afternoon of December 27. A party, consisting of Mr James Henry Hockaday and son, residing at Bondi, and Mr King and son. of Carlton, were camping on George's River, and the two boys went into the river for a swim. They could not swim and got out of their depth. Mr James Henry Hockaday, seeing the danger they were in, waded out. He was instantly seized by both boys and dragged into deep water. Being unable to swim he was soon in difficulties, and the three sank together. Mr King at this stage had been attracted to the spot, and at once dived in. He succeeded in rescuing Hockaday's son in his first effort, and then returning brought his own son to the surface, reaching the shore in an exhausted condition. Hockaday in the meantime had sunk. King then set to work to resuscitate his own son, and after four hours' hard work succeeded in bringing him round. Hockaday's body \yas\recovered next morning.
