WAIHI AFFAIRS.
THE MAYOR'S HONORARIUM.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WAIHI, this day. me question of granting the Mayor of the borough a honorarium of £3^o has caused considerable discussion in the Borough Council. Ihose oppos ed to voting this amount contend that, in face of recent retrenchment which reduced the number and hours of labour of the borough employees, the time for such a proposal is inopportune. The question will be debated in the open Council next Thursday or Friday. __.•_._•_ The question of dividing Waihi into wards wil also be discussed at a special meeting before the public. These two matters are the subject of much general speculation and comThe Council have recently passed a resolution which will be embodied in the borough by-laws, compelling the Waihi company's engines to limit their speed to seven miles an hour when running over the town crossings. This has been found necessary owin"- to the 'rate of speed now adopted, and the fact of numerous minor accidents occuring from time to time. The train practically runs through the centre of the town a considerable distance, three crossings being in the main street. The new railway time-table has caused much adverse comment throughout -he tow-nship. It will make a considerable difference in the passenger traffic. The Literary and Debating Society held a.Tennyson night last evening. Mr. Bemge presided. Musical items, recitations, etc., were contributed and an enjoyable evening was spent.
