GOLD AT KAWHIA.
RICH DISCOVERY REPORTED.
Private information was received by us from Kawhia to-day relating to a rich discovery of gold reported to have been made in that district. The find embraces several large goldbearing reefs, specimens from which have given ISozs. of gold to the ton under assay. The precise locality of the field is being kept-very secret by the Maoris who discovered it, and nothing definite is known regarding its whereabouts, save that it is on native land. The Maoris interested in the find have approached the Native Minister with a view of ascertaining what claim they have to the numeral wealth. Although indications of gold have been found in that part of the colony before this, and there have been rumours of goldbearing reefs, nothing has yet come of it. It need not occasion surprise, however, if in a district so superficially explored as the King Country has heen, and so jealously guarded by the natives from the visits of prospectors, some rich discovery should be made.
