The manager of the New Brighton Tramway Company, Mr John Thomson, disappeared on Saturday nig-ht and has not been seen since. He travelled to New Brighton by the 11 o'clock tram. Joseph Ward and Henry King were committed for trial to-day On two charges of stealing jewellery, etc, from the Central Hotel, belonging to members of the Pollard's Opera Company. DUNEDIN, this day. Arthur Blackett, alias H. Crump, was arrested at Port Chalmers on a charge of forgery and uttering at Ashburton. He was remanded to Ashburton. NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. A party of members of both Houses visiting- New Plymouth were entertained by the Mayor and leading citizens at a smoke concert last evening, the Mayor presiding. A large number of representative settlers were present. The Hon. Carroll, Mr T. McKenzie, and Major Steward spoke at some length, all the visitors expressing the greatest pleasure at the visit. OAMARU, this day. Mr. John McLean, of Eedcastle, for years a member of the Legislative Council, and formerly of the Otago Provincial Council, died this morning, after a long illness, aged 84 years. FEILDING, this day. A public meeting last night appointed a committee to canvass for the Veterans' Home, suggested by Lord It was also nnanimously resolved' that it is desirable that representations be made to the Government recommending their acquiring land in the vicinity of Cheltenham for close settlement.

In the Magistrate's Court to-day John Finerty was fined £10 and costs for allowing a boardinghouse owned t>y him in Colombo-street North to become a nuisance. The magistrate commented on th« necessity Gf a bye-law providing lor cancellation of license in such cases. He allowed twenty-eight days for . the place to be made sanitary and habitable. Defendant would be fined £5 for every day after the period stated on -which improvements were not made.
