Mr upton gives notice to acid; "Provided however, that in the event of the resignation or dea,th of a bishop, the Synod then existing shall continue in oitice until his (the bishop's) successor is appointed." The idea is to prolong the life of the present Synod, which would expire on July j*i»i in,, order that the appointment of Bishop Cowie's successor may not be dealt with partly by one Synod and partly, by another, and also to avoid hast£ in the matter. In the oas6 of a parish vacancy the nominators elected annually l-emain in office till the vacancy is filled, and as the same principle is involved the mover suggests that the same course be followed with regard to the Bishopric. The Diocesan Synod maj , bo elected for one, three or five years, and may mako regulations regarding its own sittings. Mr .Upton doubts that the suggestion can be given effect to in the present case, although there can be no doubt but that the Synod has power to make such a rule for the future.
