ACCIDENT AT WAIHI.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WAIHI, this day.
A narrow escape from a serious accident occurred at the railway crossing in Silverton Eoad early in the week. It appears that a lady with children in arms was traversing the road when, seeing a train approaching on the way to Waikino, she stood and waited for it to pass. She proceeded to step across the line when, before she was aware of anything unusual, she was knocked down and the child jerked out of her arms. It seems the train had started backing, and the lady was not quite clear of the line when the last truck came ag-ainst her shoulder. Luckily both mother and child fell clear of the line, otherwise the result might have been fatal. The engineer and others were promptly on the spot and rendered every assistance necessary. Just where the accident took place there are, points connecting the line with a branch line runr ning through the town to No. 3 shaft, consequently the train, has.to clear them before shunting back.
