MATCH AGAINST ESSEX.
(By Cable.—Press Association.— Copyright.) (Received 9.40 a.m.) LONDON, May 15. The Australian eleven began a match with Essex to-day at Leyton. The weather was gloomy, wj&h drie.
zling rain, and the wicket was soft. Play was not started till three o'clock. ~ , j Carter, Saunders and Trumble stood out of the Australian team, while Buckenham was omitted from the Essex eleveh. The home team won the toss, and sent Carpenter and Fane to the wickNoble and Jones were the bowlers. Runs came slowly on the doubtful wicket. When Fane had made nine he was bowled by Jones. One wicket for 17. - n The second wicket fell at So, Carpenter playing Noble on to his wicket. The scores are:— ESSEX.—First Innings.
