MATCH AGAINST SURREY.
AUSTRALIANS WIN BY AN INNINGS AND 7S RUNS.

The match was continued in dull, cold weather. The attendance was meagre. The pitch was rather diincult. kicking occasionally. Armstrong was awkward to play, but Noble was easier. Baker was dismissed without increasing his over-night score, Carter taking an easy catch behind the wickets oil" Noble. The departing batsman had been an horn at the wickets. Jne for 28. Of this Abel made 23. Hayes filled the vacancy, and Howell went on to bowl. In tne second over he displaced Abel's off-bail. Abel had been at the wickets ninety-five ninutes and showed good form considering the nasty wicket. Two wickets for 55. Lockwood followed, and soon lost his partner, Hayes, who was clean bowled by Howell. Three for 66. Hayward, the next man, failed to score, placing one from Saunders into Carter's hands, the wicket keeper making a smart catch. Four for 67. Brockwell now went in, and play became more lively. Twenty-six runs were added in a quarter of an hour. With the score at-93 Noble got rid of Brockwell, who gave an easy catch at point. Five wickets for 93.
After Dowson's arrival there was a series of disasters, three wickets falling in rapid succession without any addition to the score, iiockwood was clean bowled by Howell with a fine break-back. Crawford was caught by Armstrong in the slips off Howell-
Dowson was caught by Howell in the slips when trying to drive Saunders—eight wickets for 93.
Jephson added three before Howell claimed another victim, clean bowling S ted man for nil.
Jephson's turn came, next. Darling in the slips taking a catch off Saunders.
Richardson, the last man, had no chance of scoring.

With two hundred in arrears Surrey followed on, but their hopes of materially improving their position were quickly dispelled.
Hayward and Abel opened the defence. Howell and Saunderfe being the bowlers.
Howell commenced operations by removing Hay-ward's middle stump with a fine break-back, when Hayward had only two to his credit. One for 3. ;
Hays succeeded, but fell a victim to Howell, Armstrong making an easy catch in the slips. Two for 15.
At the luncheon adjournment the score stood at two for 20.
(hi resuming Lockward was caught by Trumper at thi*-d man easily, off Saunders. Three for 36.
Abel's turn came next, Howell catching him off his own bowling after he had been at the wickets for seventy miinites. He batted excellently. Four

Brockwell partnered Baker, but the latter failed to stop one of Noble's, who had gone on in place of .Saunders.. Five for 57. Dowson was the next. Howell, get- ! ting in some splendid work, shifted BrockweH's . leg stump in the batsman's attempt to hit out. Six for 63. Crawford ran up a' dozen before he was clean bowled by Howell. Seven for 75. Jenhson found Howell unplayable, and succumbed without scoring- to a fine off-break. Dowson had compiled four when Stedman came to his assistance and made a useful stand. Stedman's play was characterised by fine hitting. His career was ended by Noble finding the timbers. Nine wickets for 122. No other scores were made, Surrey being all out-for 122.
