THE QUEENSLAND DROUGHT
VERY SERIOUS EFFECTS.
BRISBANE, May 12.
Messrs Cobb and Co., contractors for carrying the mails in the interior, have notified the Federal Government that they are compelled, through the drought, to stop their carriage. For a long time they have been carrying the mails at a great loss, and the Federal Government having refused to make any easement in the terms, Messrs Cobb last Saturday stopped running their coaches.
Four thousand miles of road are affected, and postal communication and passenger traffic thereon are completely stopped, and trade in the interior paralysed.
There are prospects of famine dn the outlying districts.
The effects of the drought are apparent from the fact that Messrs Cobb's feed account this*, year is £30,000, while normally it is £6000.
