Last evening a most enjoyable smoke concert, tendered to the crew of H.M.S. Ringarooma and the members of the local Permanent Force by the vicar (the Rev. T. Eykyn), was held in the schoolroom attached to Holy Trinity Church, Devonport. The room was nicely decorated with flags . and foliage. There was a large attendance, including ladies, and an exJ cellent programme was gone through, a considerable portion being contributed by the men-o'-warsmen. One item which excited great interest was an exhibition of fencing by two of the sailors. A prominent feature of the entertainment was the splendid singing of the Waiata quartette, which evoked a storm of applause. Light refreshments, provided by ladies of the parish, were handed round during the evening. Altogether the function, which was a novelty in the parish, was a most agreeable one, and was voted by everyone a splendid success.
