On Tuesday afternoon last the staff of the Bank of New Zealand assembled to say gocxi-bye to Mr J. C. Hodges, jun., who leaves for' Vancouver by the Taviuni this evening. Mr Hodges has been connected with the staff for 12 years, and is well known as one of the ledger-keeper* of the bank. In a few well-chosen words the manager, Mr Buller, expressed the regret which was generally felt at Mr Hodges' leaving, and on behalf of the staff presented him with a serviceable solid leather tra-velling-bag as a parting memento.

A start will probably be made this week to continue laying the electric tramways underground conduit system along- Beach Rbad. Good progress is being made with the laying of the tram rails on the Newmarket section. The pick and shovel men have broken the roadway in Symoncls street a& far as Karangahape Road, and the laying of the rails is forging ahead up "Wellesley-street East; The special work of laying connections at the corner of Queen and Customs street will shortly be commenced. Four steamers are now afloat bring' ing material to the general contractors for ■ the Electric Tramways Messrs. J. G. White and Co., for,completing the contract. The steamers Oakley and Hams, from New York, to arrive shortly, have material for the power-house, and also large shipments of tiles and rails. The Indfalema and Indraghiri, from London, are bringing out the overhead material. The foundation for the powerhouse has been completed, and tha cement beds for the electric plant will be finished in the course of! a day or two. Already a fifth of tli& great steel chimney stack to the power-house has been completed. This stack, when finished, will stand 125 feet high, and will be self-sup-porting.
