POLICE COURT

At the Police Court yesterday afteinoon, before Mr H. W. Brabant, S.M., Alfred J. Edmonds was fined 40/ and costs for failing to register his cart. George HesJick. charged on the information o£ E. Allcock with Using jnsulting language to complainant, was bound over to keep the peace for six months. Further evidence was heard in the case of Gypren Hannah v. Assid. Shewiery,inwhich defendant was changed with assault. The bench dismissed the information. .

This morning, one first offender was convicted of drunkenness and discharge cd. Annie May Tnomas, for her second offence within six months, was lined 10/ and costs. Thomas Trueman was fineo 10/ and costs for being found drunk while in charge of a horse and cart in Queen-st. A y.oung man named Charles Winburn was remanded until Mondaynext, on a charge of stealing a num>. ber of articles of clothing, total value £2 14/5, the property of J. Brown. Messrs W. H. Cooper and E. Ford were the presiding justices.

A serious fracas on board the barque Onyx, lying- at the Rattray-street wharf, Dunedin, begun late on Satur-nig-ht and was resumed, on Sunday morning. It is stated that belaying1 pins, sling-shot and other articles were freely used. Three men employed on the vessel were arrested.

The tax in men made by the war on the Post and Telegraph Department (says the Wellington "Post") is shown by the fact that over fifty members of the staif went from the colony to the war, seven others have resigned, and received positions in South Africa and about a dozen have obtained certificates of efficiency from the Department for the purpose of applying- for positions there when the war is over, or earlier if possible. Post and Telegraph men have figured in the contingents as follows: —Four i nthe First, two in the Second, four in the First, two in the Second, four in the Seventh, eight in the Eighth, eleven In the Ninth, and ten in the Tenth. Seven of the" above returned and resumed post and telegraph duty. Four ethers came back and1 re-enlisted for a further term of active service at fihe front. One man has resigned to take up an appointment in South Africa.
