CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday.
Ricearton is very quiet just now. Several horses are away at Wellington, others have been withdrawn from active work, while the few jumping horses owned in this part of the district have scarcely begun, .to take life seriously. Muscovite, who was brought down-from Wellington a week or two ago, has resumed work. He is looking in excellent health after his spell. , Wonderful, the Perkin • Warbeck IT gelding, in Lewis' stables, is being schooled over hurdles, and he promises to develop into a useful juniper.
The local trainers are beginning to break in their yearlings. Aynsley is at work on a colt by Mauser from Adventuress, and he will shortly get a colt by Conqueror from Alcestis, and another by the same sire from Mayflower. Mr Hobbs has an Auckland-bred youngster by Seaton Delaval from Leocant in hand, and also a full brother to Oyster, by Seaton Delaval from Miss Webster.
Cutts has the biggest a~nd." rrib'st promising collection, however. It numbers five, and includes Treadmill, by Bill' of Portland from Catherine Wheel (by MaximMiss Kate), Quarryman. by Bill of Portland from the Trenton mare Mandon Welda, and some particularly promising youngsters by Clanranald.
Mr R. Allen, well known in racing as the owner of Saracen, when the sou of St. George was on the turf, and a patron of M. Hobbs' stable, is about to leave on a visit to England. He will sail by way of Sydney at the end of the present week.
