Last evening in the Academy of Music, Mr J. T. Bull, of. the New Zealand Alliance, gave an address entitled "Liquor and Finance." His Worship the Mayor presided. He mentioned that Miss Bulgarmie, of the United States, would probably visit Waihi, and lecture in the interests of the Alliance.
A meeting of the Waihi Fire Brigade was held last evening in the Rob Roy Hotel. Capt. Brown presided. The Chairman stated that the Borough Council would before long take the management of the brigade over, and equip it in a manner such as would enable it to cope with any fire.
A meeting of the East Knd electors was held last night in the Central Hotel, in connection with the forthcoming school election. It was decided to nominate four members to contest the election. After a ballot had been taken Messrs J. Beck, W. Woods, J. Leece and G. Moyes were ejected as the nominees. I understand that the other pa-rt3 of Waihi. have a. strong- "ticket" to run. WAIHI, Saturday. WAIHI HOSPITAL. At a meeting of the Waihi Hospital trustees held last evening it was proposed by Mr Locke that applications be called for through the press for the position of secretary at £30 a year. Mr Hazaard moved as an amendment that the position be offered to Mr King: at a salary of £50 for 12 months. The amendment was carried. It was agreed that plans of the Whangarei Hospital be procured; that Mr Bart ley be engaged as architect, and Instructed to prepare plans of the hospital, to contain "20 beds, not to exceed £1500. It was resolved to write to the surrounding1 districts concerning the possibility of their sympathy and support. WAIHI, this day. The ceremony of the dedication of the new Catholic Church took place on Sunday, Bishop Lenihan dedicating. Both services were crowded. Father Brodie celebrated High Mass, and a special choir from Auckland assisted, also the Waihi Brass Band. Miss Annie Lorrigan sang "Aye Maria" at the offertory. Monsignor O'Reilly preached in the evening. The "Veni Creator" was sung by Mr J. F. Lowry, and Miss Annie Lorrigan sang the "Inflammatus." Misses Clara and Coleta Lorrigan and J-enkinson and Messrs Beach, Darby, and Haven also assisted. Miss Maud Anderson ably presided at the organ. The church was beautifully decorated. At the Waihi Police Court yesterday, before Mr D. Campbell and Mr R. H. Holmes, justices, John Andreade, of Whangamata, was charged with stealing a saddle on the 18th of July last, the property of John Salnsbur.y. Mr Clendon appeared for the accused, and Sergeant Brennan prosecuted. A large amount of evidence was taken, and the case was proceeding all day. In connection with the Waihi Mayoralty, an indignation meeting- is being called for the 29th for the purpose of refuting the strictures made on the Mayor. The meeting is convened by Mr S. Hannam. Feeling is very strong re the action of the Council in appointing a borough engineer. A meeting of miners held on Saturday night decided to request Councillor D. Donaldson to stand for the Mayoralty. Mr Donaldson, on a deputation waiting upon him, said he had no desire to stand; but eventually consented, a committee undertaking all arrangements. He will be duly nominated to-day. A public meeting is called for Tuesday night. Excitement ran very high on Saturday night, crowds discussing the question. The general feeling here is that Mr Donaldson will be returned against all-comers.
