The Cfitv Council has decided to invite applications for the- position of town clerk at a salary of £ 800, and has also- resolved that Mr Page, the present town clerk, become city treasurer, the position he held before his present appointment.
CKRISTCHUKCH, this day.
Messrs. Heywood and Company's tender to deliver private luggage of members of the South Island Battalion of the Tenth Contingent to various parts of the Colony has been accepted by the defence storekeeper.

A nine-roomed dwelling house in Carlyle-street, owned by Duncan Guy, and occupied by Michael Quinn, was totally destroyed by fire this morning. Very little furniture was saved. The insurances are, on the house, £250, in the London and Lancashire Office; and on the furniture £260 in the Standard.
GISBOENE, this day
The White Star liner Athenic arrived at 7.30 this morning from Lyttelton, and will spend three days here loading frozen meat, wool, tallow, etc., from the newly established Sheep Farmers' Co-operative Freezing
Works.
