A NOBLE ELEPHANT.

An elephant named "Gus," 135 years old, which had for many years travelled over England and the Continent in Ginnett's and Alexander's circuses, has died at Hereford, England, from the effects of a severe cold. His medicine during his illness included 15 bottles of whisky, rum, and brandy. His companion, "Topsy," assiduously ministered to "Gus," heaping hay on him to keep him warm, and now that her mate is dead she displays the most poignant grief. "Gus" weighed five tons and a quarter, and he was valued at £500. When at a French seaside re.sort he distinguished himself by rescuing two children who were in danger of drowning in the sea. He was bathing himself, when, hearing the children's cries, he dashed to their assistance, and brought them safely to land.
