The steamer Taviuni, which arrived from-Suva last night, fell in with the o-ale which has been raging- here ioT the past two or three days, and, m feet, throughout the whole of the Vtoya<*e tempestuous weatlb«r was encountered, The steamer left Suva at 7 p.m.. on March 4, and fell m with a strong N.E}. wind, which increased to a hurricane on Sunday morning, and continued until yesterday raornimr when the wind changed to Hie south, and'later on in. Iho day to the westward, port being made last evenin"- under favourable weat>h«r conditions. During the hurricane on Sunday some eases of oranges which were stowed on deck were soaked through and through by ttoe mountainous waves which washed the decks. An exceptionally heavy wave which came on board knocked off a piece fo the railing a Little forward of. the bridge, and scattered 'the cases, which we're lashed to the railings, a-Tl over the deck, .causing great confusion. Throughout tohe three days t-hnit the huricanc lasted seas -were continually coming down the companion way, and doing much damage to the cabin carpets, besides breaking crockery and damaging- other pr»ri«bmblc goods. When the hurricane was at its'fiercest on Monday the Taviuni was unable to continue on. her course, and was compelled tio run before the wind. Towards noon yesterday the weather moderated, and port was made as above. The flagship Royal Arthur, accompanied by the cruiser Ringurooma, went out "into the Gulf this afternoon for big gun practice, and will return on Saturday. The fleet ..will proceed to sea on Wednesday next, calling in at the Bay of Islands on their way to Sydney, and arriving in Sydney on May 7. ,^___ t; _^..___,..-j^o-^i-,
