THE GALE AT TAURANGA.

TAURANGA, this day

A gale of most unusual violence was raging here this morning, with deluges of rain. At high water, between 0 ancl 8 a.m., a tremendous sea was running in the harbour, the wind being due east, the waves broke right on to the Strand rcadwhy, doing much damage to the brcHstwork, several timbers of which were washed away. Several boats dragged their moorings, or broke away, ancl swampeu on the beach. The force of the gale broke the windows of seme of the shops on the Strand, and a good number of trees were uprooted or broken.
