Mr G. F. Furby, who has been postmaster at Rangiora (Canterbury) for a good many years, has been promoted to a similar position at Hamilton, and came up to Auckland from the'south a few days ago. The modern novelist is of another mind. Mr George Meredith lives at Boxhill, Mr Thos. Hardy at Dorchester, in the middle of his own beloved Wessex, Dr. Con ah Doyle lives at Hindhead, Mr Morrison in Essex, Mr Wills and Mrs Croker 'at Sandgate, with Mr Joseph Conrad a few miles off, Mr Henry James at Rye, MiFrankfort Moore at Windsor, Mr Eden Phillpotts and Mr W. E. Norris at Torquay, Mr Quiller Couch' at Fowey, Mr Rider Haggard in Norfolk, and Mr Baring-Gould in North Devon. Mr Hall Came gathers inspiration in the Isle of Man, and Miss Marie Coredli in the classic .atmosphere of Strat-ford-on-Avon. Of the other well known women writers, Rita lives and works at Bournemouth. Miss Helen Mathers goes regularly for working purposes to Hindhead, Lucas Malet lives in Kensington, Miss Beatrice Harraden in Hampstead, the district associated with Sir Walter Besant, Mr dv Maurier, and many other literary and artistic celebrities. Mrs Craigie (John Oliver Hobbes) does a good deal of Uier work at Lancaster Gate.
