Particulars were received in Sydneaj by the E.M.s. Miowera of the losa ol| the erstwhile Orient liner Lusitani® off the coast of St. John's, Newfoundl land. The steamer was wrecked nea» Cape Ballard whilst bound from Liver* pool to Montreal in charge of Captais McKay. Cape Ballard is situated abouff sixty miles south of St. John's. The| Lusitania was proceeding round Capet Race for Montreal, with a large cargajt and a shipload of passengers. Shq mistook her course in a dense fog ancfe went ashore near Renews, twentj^. miles north of Cape Race, before day* break. The ship ran over a reef ands| hangs against a cliff. The passengers^ mostly immigrants, were panic-strick*? en. They stampeded and fought iom the boats, but were overcome by the^1 officers and crew, who secured control after a prolonged struggle with th«j rougher element among the passeng-f ers, who used knives. The women and children were landed first and the men followed. The crew stood by the ship. The passengers state that the1 first knowledge which they had of Bifl disaster was when, owing to the ship rasping over the rocks, they were all hurled from their beds by the shocks Many of them were bruised, and they* all hurried on deck in their nighfi clothes. A scene of great excitement ensued. Five hundred people weret clamouring to escape, while the crew* tried to pacify them and launch th« boats. The male passengers in theirt attempt to seize the boats trampled? the women under foot and fought that crew with knives. Some of the morel clear headed of the passengers assisted! the crew in their efforts to get out the boats. The last reports received! stated that the steamer was breaking! up. . -.1™
