THE POLICE DEPARTMENT.

MR FISHES'S ATTACK ON CO; MISSIONEB TUNBETDGB.

(By Telegraph.—Own Corr«aponaant:

WELLINGTON, thJs <$aj*

The morning journal, comuienttnjg upon Mr Fisher's attack on Mr Com missioner Tunbridge and the admini istration of the Police Department says:—"The member for Wellington has outraged his constituents by liii wanton attack on a most able, court cous and efficient public servant. Thej have the power to call him to account and they ought to exercise it. Ther< seems to be a substratum of truth, il the allegation concerning want of hai| mony in the police force of Welling)* ton, but we feel assured that Mr Tung bridge, if given a free hand, will ref medy the matter much better than could be done by any form of Parliew mentary enquiry." J The "Post" has a back-handed bIhJ at Mr Fisher, when it says that Owin| to his persistent opposition to auj reasonable amendments in the law o; libel the paper cannot publish an^ more than a bare outline of hit charges, which are so libellous as it cause even the publisher of Hansard to feel uneasy. The articles goes on to say that Mr Fisher's advocacy oi Inspector Pender's ease is the worsi y thing that could have happened t< him. At the same time the "Post*1 deplores the want of harmony tba"| has existed for some time past in the* force, which has been inimical to its efficiency and the public interests. The debate, however, disclosed the faol that interference by members of Par< 3iament in the affairs of the force still exists in spite of the recommendations ; to the contrary by the Police Comjl mission. $,
