WAIHI V. KARANGAHAKE

WAIHI, Saturday

A rep. match took pluce this afternoon on the Waihi Recreation Reserve, between Waihi and Karangahake. The local team was that which defeated Tauranga last Saturday, with two exceptions. Waihi wore maroon, and the visitors blue and black. Mr E. Gittos, of tho Auckland Referees' Association, referced. Waihi won the toss. Menzies was captain of Waihi, and Rockley of Karangahake. Though the afternoon was wet, there was a large attendance. The Waihi Brass Band played several selections during the match. Waihi opened the ball by an attack on their opponents' 25, Cunningham leading a rush. Middleton reversed by a kick to centre, but play reverted to the blues' territory agaifn. Neutral play followed, being mostly confined to the forwards. About half-way through the first spell tho local backs began to wake up, and something like open play and combination took place amongst them. Garvey nearly recorded two tries from close play near his opponents' goal, but was weakly supported. From a passing rush, Garvey passed to Menzies, wo transferred to Thorn, this speedy back running1 right over his only opponent, and drawing first blood for Waihi. At a diilicult angle Cunningham made a splendid kick, but the oval hit the bar. Waihi 3, Karangahake 0. No other score resulted in this spell. The second spell proved very exciting, and was well contested. While hard, close scrum work was proceeding near Waihi's goal line, the visitors got the oval amongst their forwards, and Riesterer registered a score for Karangahake. McLean took the kick and cleverly converted. Karangahake 5, Waihi 3. The maroons rallied well after this, and their backs got in some fine runs. From the visitors' 25, Thorn, Landy, Menzies, and Morgan swept up the field, keeping the oval well in possession, Morgan eventuaJly finding the goal line. This was the best exhibition of football in the match. Cunningham failed to convert. Waihi 6 , Karangahake 5. Towards the finish play became very fast, but no further score resulted, Waihi thus winning their second rep. match this season, with no losses as yet. Newdick played a sound game at full. Landy, Thorn, and Morgan, the threequarters, all' played first-class games after once getting warmed up. Menzies and Garvey were also in splendid form, doing an immense amount of work. The wing.; also worked well. Cunningham was a whole team in himself, though well supported by the other forwards. Of the visitors, McLean, Rockley, Johnson, Kirkwood, Johnison, and Bagust showed up well throughout. Mr Gittos guve universal satisfaction, and kept his field and spectators well in hand during the match.
