BOROUGH MEETINGS.
NEWMAKKET,
The Newmarket Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr J. McColl) in the chair. There were also present Messrs F. Bennett, J. M. Laxon, J. Caston, E. Davis, J. Kennedy, J. Angus, W. Edgerley and J. Seccombe. Electrical Power.—Mr P. M. Hansen, of the Auckland Electrical Tramway company wrote stating that hi;s Company were prepared to supply the borough of Newmarket with electrical power for lighting, cooking and other purposes.—Cr. Laxon thought that the street lighting was the only matter that concerned the Council. Lighting private houses and supplying them with power was outside the scope of the Council. The Council's permission to introduce such power was, however, necessary. —It was decided to ask the Company to submit their proposals on the subject. Bluntly Avenue.—Mo- P. A. White wrote complaining of the inadequacy of the water supply in Huntly Avenue, and offering to enter into an agreement indemnifying the Council if they laid down a water main in the street. —It was decided to inform Mr White that the Council could not consider the matter until the road had been formed and dedicated to the Council. Newmarket Hall.—lt was decided to effect certain repairs to Newmarket Hall.
Tenders.—lt was decided to call for tenders for laying water pipes in Sara-wai-street.
Streets Committee.—Cr. Bennett reported that to lay down channelling in Park Road to carry off the storm
water would entail eocns'iderable expense. It had been suggested that a channel be laid across the road to connect with the City Council drain as the storm water came to large extent from their property.—lt was decided to ask the City Council's permission to make the connection.
Crossing's.—Or.' Davis drew attention to the disgraceful state of the street crossing's in the borough. Resolutions -had been pas;.;ed frequently that the crossings be repaired with metal waste, but the work wa.s never carried out. —The Mayor said they were depending on iho Electric Tramways Company to make tdie crossings good. —dt was decided to repair the crossing's temporarily. Loan Proposals.—The Mayor's motion "That a sum of money be raised for the purpose of effecting certain drainage and other works within the borough" was considered.-—-Thu Mayor explained that it would be necessary to have a survey made of the work to be done —Cr. Davis moved, and ii was carried, "That the Council go into Committee and discuss the matter thoroughly."
