Drunkenness. —Four first offenders were convicted of drunkenness and discharged, while a fifth, who did not appear, was. fined 5/. Percy Smith and William •S'raith were each lined 10/ or 48 hours in default. George Rowley and Georgina Thornton were each fined 5/ or 24 hours in default. An old age pensioner was remanded for a week.
Vagrancy. —David Mills, an old white-haired man, was charged with being found without lawful excuse by night on the premises of John Whisker, at Newmarket. Accused had been remanded to see whether the Costley Home authorities would admit him* to the institution. The Sub-Ins.pector said the Home authorities would have nothing to do with the man, who was quite without means. His Worship said it would be charity to send accused to Mount Eden for a month, which he would accordingly do. Theft.—Four young men, named John Simmonds, John Walker, Charles Hatton and Solomon Levy were charged with stealing a number of articles, to the total value of £6 10/10, the property of George Miller, the New Zealand. Clothing Factory and some persons unknown. Simmonds, Walker and Hatton pleaded guilty, and Levy not guilty. The evidence* showed that Levy was not implicated, and he was discharged The ..others were sentenced to a month's imprisonment.
Alleged Brothel.—A young woman named Jennie Kerr pleaded not guilty to a charge of keeping a brothel in Durham-street. On the application of the police the case was adjourned till Friday.
