BOER BRUTALITY.
SCOUTS CRUELLY FLOGGED
O'OKIEP, May 14.—John P.ok, one of the three Namaqua Border Scouts captured by Hit.' lloers when they raided Pella on March 2, \\u:< arrived here. His back if; terribly lacerated. Tie was taken with the other two scouts at Kakamas. and then cruelly flogged with a trace, receivingl 112 blows. The other two scouts received 150 and 107 lashes respectively. They were all sentenced to death, and made to di,^ their own graves. The death sentence was commuted to enslavement. Bok was taken to Brypal, but effected his escape. On his arrival at O'okiep lie reported himself to Colonel IShelton, the commandant, who ordered a medical examination. The man, being1 found to be still suffering from the effects of the brutal treatment he had received, was "ranted short leave. The commandant ordered a photograph of his back to be taken for transmission to the authorities.
Bok stated that he fainted while being flogged, and on regaining consciousness begged for water, vvherexipon the Boers jeeringly taunted him with having come out to kill Boers. Froneman was the judge at the trial of the scouts, and a wellknown rebel, named John Louw. was on the bench when sentence was
given. Trooper Van Eeenen, of the Cape Police, who was taken prisoner on the same occasion, is stated to have been released or escaped.
